The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and given more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.
Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.
This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His son, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a assembly of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the possibility of Bolsonaro's transfer to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

Background on Conviction
The former president was determined responsible of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to kill the current president and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over the former president's case.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been provoked by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
