The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Cartoon Journey with a Touch of Family-Friendly Tween Love Story

In this cartoon journey for preteens, the fairy community is dedicated to collecting baby teeth of slumbering children and placing gold under their pillows. Skateboarding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about spending his future to collecting baby teeth—a sentiment that’s completely understandable. He is just a bit more curious about the underlying economics of the situation: the fairies hand over the molars to unseen goblins, who supply gold as payment. But Van’s curiosity is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be not at all the ugly creature he expected.

An Unlikely Connection and Common Enemy

The stage is set for an adventure with a light sprinkling of teen romance (even though it remains very much suitable for children). The fairy and goblin groups are separated from one another, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to bring people as one. Both groups portrayed in the film are remarkably alike, yet both maintain biased views about the opposite side. Fairies are supposed to be self-centered sorts, prone to taking anything they want, while the goblins are reportedly dim-witted, foul-smelling, and primitive, but are in fact bright and technologically advanced.

Of course, such a setup requires a shared foe to join forces against, and this is duly provided by a group of vicious spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush about their intentions: they aim to devour the goblins and fairies, and they serve as quite savage, though not especially competent, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts

There aren’t all that many animated films targeting the viewer group that is beginning to have early romances, but aren’t yet mature enough for the content 14-year-olds are watching instead of Twilight. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, this is unlikely to become their new all-time fave, but you could do worse.

A Tooth Fairy Tale releases in Scottish cinemas starting October 10 and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
