Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like typical body horror, but beneath Together lies a deep contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.
